WABL Softball had quite the exciting season in 2023 for the 112 girls that played! We had 9 total teams across all of our age groups with 1 team winning the CLS Championship and 1 team coming in 2nd. WABL softball is part of the Community Softball League (CLS) which includes teams from Copley, Revere, Highland and Cloverleaf.
We had 35 of our youngest players (6-8 years old) play coach pitch. Thank you to our head coaches last season in coach pitch, William Gibson for the Falcons, Dean Stevens for the Racers and Allan Sweet for the Rubber Ducks.
Our next age group is called American League. These girls are ages 9-10 and play a modified version of kid and coach pitch. This allows the girls the opportunity to learn how to pitch while also getting an opportunity to hit from a coach, allowing all players to have more experience both at bat and in the field. We had 36 girls playing American League and special thanks to our head coaches in this league, Rick Schroeter for the Falcons, Matthew Ryan for the Rubber Ducks and Melissa Wheeler for the Racers. Special shout out to the Falcons on their CSL Championship win! Way to go girls!
National League is the next age group for girls 11-12 years old and we had 28 girls playing in this league over two teams. Girls at this age group play all of the regular softball rules, and one of their favorite parts of moving up to this league is being able to steal all of the bases. Special thanks to the coaches in this league, Emily Ocheltree and Michelle Jukanovic co-coaching the Falcons and Melissa Wheeler and Allan Sweet co-coaching the Rubber Ducks. Congratulations to the girls on the Rubber Ducks for coming in 2nd place in the CLS Championship game to Cloverleaf.
The final age group is Junior League for girls 13 and 14 years old. The Zips were led by coach Robbie Martell. Robbie has been coaching for several years and we want to give him a special thanks for all of his dedication to WABL since this was his daughter’s last year in WABL. For 2024, the Junior League girls, along with the CSL, will be joining the Springfield Township Athletic Association (STAL) league in order to provide the girls with more competition.
